1141 Adventures – Mountain Masters Course
Duration: 3 days
Day 1 – Cairngorm Lodge & Meall a’ Bhuachaille
Meeting Point: Cairngorm Lodge at 12:00 noon
Distance: ~6 miles / 9.7 km
Ascent: 1,896 ft / 578 m
Meet for introductions and a brief overview of hill navigation before heading out to summit Meall a’ Bhuachaille. Throughout the walk, you’ll apply practical navigation skills in real terrain.
In the evening, attend a lecture on mountain weather, followed by a detailed briefing for Day 2.
Day 2 – Ben Macdui & Mountain Skills
Distance: Approx. 10–12 miles / 16–19 km
Ascent: 3,309 ft / 1,009 m
Time on the Hill: ~6–7 hours
Begin with a session on what to pack for the hills, discussing equipment selection and preparation.
Depart to ascend Ben Macdui, travelling across the Cairngorm plateau while developing navigation techniques, pacing, route choice, and terrain management.
After returning, take part in evening lectures on mountain craft and leadership, focusing on decision-making, risk assessment, and effective group management in mountain environments.
Day 3 – First Aid, Rescue Protocols & Debrief
Location: Creag a’ Chalamain
The final day centres on first aid lectures and practical sessions in a mountain setting. You will practice emergency response, casualty care, and the structured implementation of mountain rescue protocols, including scene assessment, stabilisation, evacuation methods, and communication procedures with rescue services.
The course concludes with a full debrief, consolidating learning across navigation, leadership, mountain craft, and rescue procedures — ensuring you leave with the confidence and practical skills to operate effectively in real mountain scenarios.
Preparing means building stamina and packing smart. This is a guided trip, designed to support you every step of the way, but a good level of fitness will allow you to gain the very best out of your day. Aim to comfortably walk 6–8 hours and include some hill training beforehand. Wear broken-in hiking boots and bring waterproof layers, even in summer, as mountain weather can change quickly.
You do not need technical climbing experience however, you should:
Be comfortable walking for 8-10 hours
Have a good level of general fitness
Be confident on uneven, rocky terrain
Have some prior hillwalking experience (recommended for success)
It’s suitable for determined beginners who prepare well, wear proper hiking boots, and understand that mountain weather can change quickly.
